Lancaster City & County Medical Society
Two brothers who grew up in Pennsylvania’s Amish country played an active role in medicine in the 19th century. In 1844, Dr. John Atlee was a founder and president of the Lancaster City and County Medical Society, the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the American Medical Association (AMA). His younger brother, Washington, was instrumental in the formation of the American Gynecological Society. Together, the brothers revived the procedure involving surgical removal of an ovary. Washington performed the first successful myomectomy (surgical removal of a fibroid tumor of the uterus) on this date in 1844. He also followed his brother’s footsteps as president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the AMA. Copyright Aetna InteliHealth, Inc., 2009. All rights reserved.
The Lancaster City and County Medical Society (LCCMS) is proud of its past, but is sharply focused on the current and future needs of physicians. The Board of Directors is implementing a Strategic Plan that is adding value to membership and to the community. The Society represents members in discussions on public policy with state and federal public officials. LCCMS is active with organizations representing the business community as well as complimentary professional organizations. There is open dialogue with all the health systems in the county. LCCMS supports various public health organizations and it is a partner of the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMed).
LCCMS provides the following services to members:
An annual fall legislative breakfast with county and state officials provides an opportunity for members to talk to their legislator one-on-one. The LCCMS Board of Directors actively lobbies for MCARE relief. Additional legislation aimed at providers, along with Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement levels are a real threat to organized medicine. It is important that we speak with one, loud voice.
The Practice Administrator Membership provides support as well as access to information that is beneficial to their practice. If you are a medical student, resident, fellow or retired physician, your membership is either free or significantly discounted.
The Strategic Planning Task Force committees provide opportunities to serve your profession at the local level as a committee member, a director on the board, or a delegate to the Pennsylvania Medical Society Annual Meeting. The LCCMS Board recommends local members to serve on PAMed advisory councils. Several Lancaster County Physicians currently serve in these positions.
The Lancaster County Medical Foundation programs provide access to medical care for those in need through the volunteer services of our generous Lancaster County physicians and the PALCO Program.
The Lancaster County Business Group on Health, an affiliate of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, provides LCCMS with a standing seat on their board which gives physicians a voice as providers and as employers in LCBGH’s decision making process.
A partnership between LCCMS and PAMed provides state support and resources to the County Medical Society.
Scholarships to medical students who are residents of Lancaster County are awarded through the Lancaster Medical Society Foundation. Donations from local hospital medical staffs have assisted in making this foundation a viable resource for Lancaster County students entering medical school.
Scholarships are awarded to nursing students who exhibit excellence in their performance.
Cell phone discounts for members have been negotiated through a local Verizon Wireless vendor.
Lancaster County Science Fair awards are given by LCCMS annually. Student’s projects are judged by a volunteer member physician.
Social events are held to give members an opportunity to network with other physicians and healthcare leaders.
